Desktop

Can you use Enkrypt on a desktop computer?

Yes, but “desktop” can mean two different things: the browser extension on any computer, or MyEtherWallet's Mac App Store app. This guide separates them so you download the right thing.

There is no native Enkrypt app for Windows or Linux. On those systems, you use the Enkrypt browser extension in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Firefox, Opera or Safari. On macOS, you can use the same extension or install MyEtherWallet's Enkrypt app from the Mac App Store.

Start with the source, not the platform label

A page that advertises an “Enkrypt desktop app for Windows” is not automatically official. Begin at enkrypt.com or the Mac App Store listing from MyEtherWallet.

The Mac desktop app

MyEtherWallet publishes Enkrypt: ETH, BTC & SOL Wallet on the Mac App Store. The listing is free, sold by MyEtherWallet, Inc., and requires macOS 12.3 or later. It presents the same multichain wallet in a desktop window rather than in a browser toolbar.

The Mac app is useful if you prefer launching a dedicated application, or if your browser workflow is deliberately kept separate from your wallet. It does not change the fundamentals: you still manage the recovery phrase, local password, networks and transaction approvals.

Windows and Linux: use the extension

Enkrypt's official download path is organised around browser extensions, and the product is commonly described as a browser wallet. There is no separate native Windows or Linux installer published by MyEtherWallet in the official listing we reviewed. That is not a limitation for most people: a pinned extension in a desktop browser is the normal desktop experience.

Use a current browser, install from its official store, and keep the browser itself updated. If a site offers an .exe or .deb “Enkrypt wallet” download, treat it as unverified until you can trace it back to MyEtherWallet's official channels.

Desktop-browser setup that stays manageable

  1. 01

    Use a dedicated browser profile

Create a profile for wallet and dApp activity. It keeps extensions, history and saved passwords separate from everyday browsing.

Watch for: A shared profile on a managed work computer may be reset or monitored by an administrator.

  2. 02

    Install Enkrypt from the store

Follow the official site to Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera or Safari. Confirm MyEtherWallet as the publisher, then pin the extension.

Watch for: A second extension asking to read and change all your data on every site.

  3. 03

Unlock only when you need it

Keep the wallet locked when you are not using it. Your local password is a lock, not a backup.

Watch for: Leaving a wallet unlocked on a shared or remote-access computer.

  4. 04

Check the browser window before approving

Look at the address bar, the dApp domain and the wallet prompt. A convincing interface inside the wrong domain is still a phishing page.

Watch for: Wallet popups that appear while you are not expecting a transaction.

  5. 05

    Keep a separate recovery location

Store the phrase offline, away from the computer. Do not rely on the same desktop that runs the wallet as your only copy.

Watch for: Screenshots, cloud notes and password-manager entries for the recovery phrase.

Which desktop option should you use?

Choose the extension if…

  • You use Windows, Linux, ChromeOS or more than one operating system.
  • You want Enkrypt available beside the dApp you are using.
  • You prefer one consistent install method across machines.

Choose the Mac app if…

  • You use macOS 12.3 or later and prefer a separate wallet window.
  • You want your everyday browser to carry fewer wallet permissions.
  • You are comfortable installing and updating from the Mac App Store.

Whichever you choose, use one wallet as the source of truth. Running the same recovery phrase in two places is normal for recovery, but two independent wallets with the same assets in the same browser profile is a setup that invites mistakes.

Desktop use with a Ledger or Trezor

Enkrypt supports adding hardware wallet accounts. On a desktop computer, connect the device, choose Add hardware wallet account from the account menu, select Ledger or Trezor and follow the device prompts. The hardware wallet keeps its own recovery phrase; adding it to Enkrypt does not copy those keys into the software wallet.

For larger holdings, the hardware approval step is the most valuable upgrade you can make. It means a malicious website cannot complete a transaction with a browser click alone; the device still has to confirm the details.

Three desktop mistakes to avoid

Downloading from a search ad

Search results can be bought by impersonators. Type the official domain, use a bookmark, or open the store listing from the official site.

Trusting a “desktop version” that is really a repackaged extension

A third-party wrapper or installer is another party in your security chain. If it is not from MyEtherWallet or an official app store, do not use it for a wallet.

Storing the recovery phrase on the same computer

Malware that reaches the desktop can read files, clipboard contents and screenshots. Keep the phrase offline and physically separate.
